Laying Hold of the Promises

2 Peter 1:4 Whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises: that by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust.

God has given to us exceeding great and precious promises through His word, that by theses promises we might be made partakers, partakers of His divine nature, and partakers of all the things He has provided for those who are in Christ.

Our Promised Land

The Bible, the word of God, is filled with the promises of God given to those who believe. It is the believer’s land of promise, a land filled with His promises, a land that may be dwelt in by faith in the promises the Lord has given.

Possessing the Land

Joshua 1:3 Every place that the sole of your foot shall tread upon, that have I given unto you, as I said unto Moses.

A land of promise was given to Israel, a land that flowed with milk and honey, and filled with everything they would ever need in their lives. Yet they were required to go in and possess it. It wasn’t automatic. God told Joshua, every place that the sole of your foot shall tread upon, that have I given unto you. Yes, it had been promised to him, but his feet had to tread upon it before it became a reality in his life.

So it is, with us today. God’s exceeding great and precious promises belong to us as believers in Christ. But they are not automatically received in our lives, they must be possessed. They must be taken by faith.

Knowing the Promises

Romans 10:14 How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? and how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard?

It’s impossible to believe in, or have faith in, something we haven’t heard about. It’s not possible to lay hold of something we don’t know exists. Thus, we must first know what the promises of God are before we can begin to possess them in our lives.

Faith Comes by Hearing

Romans 10:17 So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.

Faith in the promises comes by hearing the promises. And the best way to develop faith in the promises of God is by hearing ourselves declare them over our lives. When we do that, we personalize them, they become our promises, and not just some vague scripture verses we read one time or heard someone quote is a sermon. They become our own, they become God’s promises to us, personally. We take possession of them.
